What is a backflow?
A backflow prevention device is used to protect our potable water supplies from contamination due to backflow and back siphonage. It essentially prevents water, once in your home (or business) from flowing backwards, keeping the water we drink, safe and clean. It prevents potentially toxic water from contaminating our clean water supplies due to backflow and back siphonage.
Why do these devices need to be tested?
In compliance with international, local building and plumbing codes, your municipalities water supply is required to be protected against contaminates that may be introduced into our clean water lines. In Telluride, Mountain Village and San Miguel County, backflows are required by these codes and is law to be tested annually. Every home, building or condo unit(s) has a backflow prevention device. These devices protect our domestic drinking water systems, irrigation systems and fire suppression systems. We are here to keep you in compliance.
Testing
A backflow test involves gauging the resistance of springs located in the device. There are required and specified minimum pressure readings that these springs must adhere to. Over time, hard water and debris can build up. Springs can wear out. Rubber ‘O'-rings’ can crack. These problems prevent the performance of these crucial devices.
A backflow test will take approximately an hour. It does require your water to be turned off for a short period of time.
The best way to schedule a backflow test is by calling our office (970) 300 9944 to get on our calendar. Alternatively, you can send us an email at tellurideirrigation@mac.com. To keep your testing simple, we recommend an annual backflow test when we turn on your irrigation system in the spring.
